This architectural treasure in downtown Troy dating from the 19th Century houses a 21st Century collection which includes the Troy Room (local history and genealogy) and newspapers from Troy’s earliest days. A branch of that library is housed in the Lansingburgh Academy Building two blocks east of the Herman Melville House.

Uncle Sam Wilson earned his fame and name among U.S. troops in the War of 1812. He’s buried in Lansingburgh in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Cohoes, NY. The Van Schaick Mansion is one of the most historic homes in New York State with a rich history that is tied to both the French and Indian War & the American Revolution. Built circa 1735, the house was used as military headquarters for a number of English generals during the French and Indian War.

These are local chapters of the National DAR. Van Rensselaer Chapter (Troy area) is named for Stephen Van Rensselaer a Lt. Governor of New York, a Dutch patroon, founder of what became RPI, soldier and statesman. The Peter Gansevoort Chapter (Albany and Cohoes area) is named for Brigadier General Peter Gansevoort, the “hero of Fort Stanwix”. He was also maternal grandfather of Herman Melville. The DAR is a lineage society for women which supports history education, American citizenship, patriotism and honors those who served the cause of American freedom
