Former Village Official Died Last Night Following Six Weeks’ Illness—Was President in Masonic Circles.
James Gillespoe, second oldest member of Phoenix Lodge, F. and A. M., and long prominent in affairs of the village of Lansingburgh, died last night at his home, 686 Fourth Avenue, following an illness of about six weeks. Mr. Gillespie became a member of Phoenix Lodge in April, 1872. He was appointed to the Police Department of Lansingburgh in 1891 and resigned two years later. He was twice Trustee of the village and was a member of the Board of Trustees when Lansingburgh was annexed to Troy. Mr. Gillespie was a brushmaker by trade.
Mr. Gillespie possessed a friendly disposition and was admired by a host of friends. He was a daily visitor at the Masonic Club until his recent illness. He was born in Ireland January 15, 1849, and came to this city when three years old. He had always resided in Lansingburgh while in this country Mr. Gillespie was an attendant at St. Mark’s Methodist Church. He is survived by a sister, Emma; several nieces and nephews and several grandnieces and grandnephews. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the residence with Rev. Freeman S. Kline, pastor of St. Mark’s Church, officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mr. Gillespie served as Master of Phoenix Lodge in 1882.
