Socialist Party
Several people from Lansingburgh ran as candidates of the Socialist Party (1901-1972) or its predecessor the Social Democratic Party (1898-1901), and at least a few Socialist Party meetings were held in Lansingburgh. Norman Mattoon Thomas (1884-1968) who spoke at Dania Hall in Lansingburgh on October 27, 1913 would become the Socialist Party’s candidate for many offices including New York State Governor in 1924, and United States President in 1928, 1932, 1936, 1940, 1944, and 1948.
The Encyclopedia of New York State, listing “Third Parties in New York State, 1900-2002,” noted the party to have had ballot access as the Social Democratic Party for 1900-1904 and as the Socialist Party for 1906-1944, 1948, and 1952.

Troy Times. October 29, 1912:
John Middlebrook, candidate for Alderman of the Fifteenth Ward, presided at the meeting of the Socialists of the three Lansingburgh wards, which was held at Dania Hall yesterday afternoon. John Long, Socialist candidate for Mayor, was the first speaker. He told the audience, which was a large one in spite of the rainy weather, what the Socialists would do if elected to office in Troy. He attacked the traction problem, saying that “there was a law limiting the number of cattle and hogs which might be crowded into a car, but that the people’s patience was the only limit to the number of human cattle that might be crowded into a street car. He said the municipalization of street railway lines should interest the army of Trojan strap hangers.” Norman M. Thomas of Schenectady, the principal speaker, took as his subject, “Socialism and the City.” He drew many of his illustrations from the workings of the Schenectady Socialist administration.

An address on “Socialism and Suffrage,” with a special discussion of some of the testimony given before the Federal Relations Commission and its relation to the “votes for women” propaganda, will be given by Mrs. Mary G. Schoenberg, woman’s correspondent of the Socialist Party of the state of New York, at Lansing’s Grove, Hudson and Lansing Avenues, Lansingburgh, Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Mrs. Schoenberg will speak in Watervliet at Broadway and Sixteenth Street this evening, and will talk at the corner of State and Third Streets, Troy, to-morrow evening. Her subject will be “The Working Class and the Vote.”
